Chapter 18
Inside Job
I did not follow Wolfsonâs rule number four. I am not prepared. I think Cole said the thumb drive would blink to signal when the computer upload is completed. But I donât exactly have his contact info, so I canât double check now. I suppose I could ask Wolfson or Denning for Coleâs number, but Iâm pretty sure Iâm not supposed to just call the guy. I also didnât bring any props to explain a prolonged visit to Evanâs apartment. Iâm a mess.
I consider what I need to do. Should I log into Evanâs computer before taking Max out? Then remove the drive once we get back? What if Evan comes home while weâre out? Finally, I decide to violate Evanâs privacy first and wait for the information to upload. Then Iâll take Max out for his late morning walk. Might as well get the espionage over with first.
As I walk past Lloyd in the lobby, a large blond man in an expensive suit looks up from The Wall Street Journal.
âMiss Stack?â he asks in a Southern drawl. As he stands up, he looms over me, built like a mountain. I guess Bokra hires all types. At least I hope heâs here from Bokra.
âUm, yes? But call me Jenna. Where are you from?â The thumb drive feels conspicuous in the front pocket of my jeans. Can he see the outline? Why did I have to wear such tight pants?
âTexas, maâam. Iâm Jerome, from Bokra. Would you like an escort?â
Thatâs the last thing I want, but I donât want to seem too cavalier, so I pretend to consider his offer before responding, âNo. Iâm fine. Just going to play with Max a little, brush him, then take him out for a walk.â
âOkay. Call down if you change your mind.â He looks at his watch. âIf Iâm not here, itâll be Charles.â
Ah. A shift change could work in my favor.
He goes back to reading his paper as I disappear into the elevator. Once inside the apartment, I greet Max and give him a treat to quiet him down. I check the apartment to make sure Iâm alone, then settle in at the computer. Might as well get comfortable. Cole said the upload could take five or ten minutes.
I take out the thin, metal thumb drive. Am I really going to do this? Yes. Cole may have unorthodox methods, but he is an FBI agent. People could be in danger. Heck, I am in danger. And I donât owe Evan anything. I slide the drive into the correct port. The screen goes black for a second and then back to the desktop like nothing happened.
I guess thatâs good.
I canât help but think about the other night, Evan sneezing in a pink robe and cooking dinner in his boxers. He couldnât possibly be involved in anything sinister. Could he? Heâs a âglorified accountantâ and a foodie, and aside from being a bit of a snob, a good guy. This is a violation of his privacy.
